What causes hip pain
Injuries or health issues involving the hip can limit its movement and weight-bearing ability. Even though the hip is resilient and built for regular motion and some wear, it is not immune to changes over time. Cartilage can wear out or get damaged, muscles and tendons can become strained and falls or injuries may lead to hip fractures, all of which can cause hip pain.
Conditions that we treat

Hip Osteoarthritis
In Hip osteoarthritis, the soft cartilage layer of the ball and socket joint is worn off and damaged. Although this may occur without any identifiable causes, other conditions such as hip dysplasia, avascular necrosis, inflammatory arthritis, and even hip fractures can result in osteoarthritis of the hip.
The common symptoms affecting patients with these conditions include pain, stiffness and shortening of the affected limb leading to difficulties in walking and even causing pain in other joints because of the deformity

Hip Fracture
A hip fracture results in a break of the bone around the hip joint, and can be divided into 2 distinct types, namely the Neck of Femur Fracture (NOF) and the Pertrocanteric (intertrochanteric (IT) and sub trochanteric fracture) fracture. These fractures commonly happen because of a fall from a low height and will result in severe pain and the inability to walk but occasionally, it may feel like nothing more than a painful bruise.
The treatment of a Neck of Femur (NOF) fracture depends on the patient’s age and activity level. An older patient who is less active will benefit from a hemiarthroplasty, where the broken part of the femur bone is replaced with a metal prosthesis. This allows the patient to start walking again after surgery and to begin the recovery process, while avoiding the complications of a longer surgery.
However, a patient who is more active and has higher demands may elect to have a total hip replacement performed instead. A total hip replacement allows the patient to start walking immediately and have better function. A total hip replacement also prevents some of the complications associated with a hemiarthroplasty. The hip replacement surgery can be performed with minimally invasive methods such as the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) to the hip.
Immediate medical attention and surgical intervention are typically required to repair the fractured hip and ensure proper healing and mobility.
Patients who have sustained an IT or subtrochanteric fracture will usually have the broken bones surgically fixed, either with plates and screws (Dynamic Hip Screw) or with the insertion of titanium intramedullary rods (Cephalomedullary Nail).
After surgery for both NOF and pertrochanteric fractures, a period of rehabilitation and recovery will be required. At the same time, treatment of some of the underlying conditions like osteoporosis can commence so that we can restore maximum function for our patients.

Bursitis of the Hip
Hip injuries are a common source of debilitating hip pain, with conditions such as hip fractures, bursitis, and labral tears often causing discomfort and limited mobility. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial to alleviate pain and promote optimal hip function.

Labral Tear of the Hip
A labral tear in the hip occurs when the ring of cartilage surrounding the hip socket (acetabulum) is damaged. This can result in hip pain, stiffness, clicking or catching sensations, and reduced hip function. Treatment for a labral tear may involve physical therapy, pain management, and, in some cases, arthroscopic surgery to repair the tear.
It is advisable to consult a doctor if
You have experienced a fall or sustained a hip injury.
Your hip pain is progressively worsening.
Daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, or sitting are becoming challenging.
You have noticed symptoms like fever, general illness, or unexplained weight loss.
For sudden, severe, worsening pain, or if you've suffered hip trauma, seek immediate medical attention.
Surgeries Commonly Performed by Dr Alvin Tan Include:
- Total Hip Replacement (Direct Anterior Approach)
- Robotic Hip Surgery
- Hip Fracture Surgery
What is Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) Hip Replacement Surgery?
The Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) Hip Replacement Surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique for replacing the hip joint. Unlike traditional hip replacement methods, the DAA involves accessing the hip joint from the front, as opposed to the side or rear.
The technique reduces muscle trauma, lessens postoperative pain, enables faster recovery, and allows earlier rehabilitation exercises. Early rehabilitation is crucial for regaining hip strength, mobility, and range of motion.
Furthermore, it improves joint stability and lowers the risk of hip dislocation, offering patients greater freedom and flexibility during rehabilitation and daily activities.
Dr. Alvin Tan has received training from international experts in the field of minimally invasive hip surgery, and has taught these techniques to surgeons from Singapore, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar.
Am I Suitable for DAA Hip Replacement Surgery?
If you are considering hip replacement, discuss the Direct Anterior Approach with us to explore its suitability for a successful and comfortable recovery.
